ANZACs First Day on Gallipoli

A century on

One hundred years ago today my uncle John Wesley Cobb was wounded on Walker's Ridge, Gallipoli, receiving a gunshot wound to his thigh. John was evacuated to Cairo where he spent four months recuperating. 

This photo was taken one day after John was discharged from hospital. It seems, by his posture, that he was still a bit sore.

Today my family laid a poppy for great Uncle George who died in the Battle of Paschendaele.

What a special day to remember the ANZACs in my family, particularly great Uncle John who landed in the Gallipoli peninsula 100 years ago today. 

Wreath of remembrance

My class made a wreath in remembrance of Corporal P J Devereaux. 

Each class at our school made a wreath and laid them amongst our Field of Remembrance.

I have been amazed by the bravery and dedication shown by ANZAC nurses during WW1 as I read ANZAC Girls by Peter Rees. What caring and hard working girls. 

This book contains many heart-breaking stories but also stories of amazing courage and dedication. ANZAC nurses definitely need more recognition. Lest we forget.
